Why Do I Feel Like Something Is About to Happen? Intuition, Premonitions and That Unexplainable Feeling

Have you ever had a feeling that something was about to happen, even though you couldn't explain why?

Perhaps you suddenly thought about someone you hadn't spoken to in years, only for them to contact you later that day. Maybe you had a strange feeling about a situation that seemed perfectly fine on the surface, or you woke one morning with the strongest sense that something in your life was about to change.

Sometimes it's a feeling of excitement, almost like something wonderful is approaching. Other times, there's an uncomfortable sense that something isn't quite right.

And the strangest part? You often can't explain where the feeling came from.

So, what does it mean when you feel something is about to happen? Is it intuition, a spiritual premonition, your guardian angels, or simply your mind recognising something you haven't consciously noticed?

Let's explore something that has fascinated people for centuries.

What Does It Mean Spiritually When You Feel Something Is About to Happen?

In spirituality, this experience is often described as an intuitive feeling, a premonition, or a sense of knowing.

It's the feeling that something is developing before you have any obvious evidence of it.

You might experience it physically, emotionally or as a thought that appears seemingly out of nowhere.

For example, you could be going about your ordinary day when you suddenly feel certain that you're going to hear from someone. You weren't expecting a message, you hadn't been thinking about them, and yet their name enters your mind.

A few hours later, your phone rings.

When something like that happens, it's understandable to wonder whether there was a spiritual connection.

Many spiritual traditions believe we can sometimes become aware of things through intuition before we fully understand them logically.

However, feeling certain about something doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen. Our minds are constantly noticing patterns, making predictions and drawing on previous experiences.

I think the interesting question is not simply whether the feeling was correct, but why it stood out to us so strongly in the first place.

The Difference Between Intuition and a Premonition

These two experiences are often spoken about as though they're identical, but there is a difference in how people describe them.

Intuition is generally understood as knowing or sensing something without consciously working through all the reasons behind it.

Imagine meeting someone new. They're friendly, polite and haven't done anything obviously wrong, but something about the interaction doesn't sit comfortably with you.

You might have noticed a contradiction in their behaviour, a change in their voice or something that reminds you of a previous experience.

Your brain can process subtle information before you're able to explain it.

That's one way intuition works.

A premonition, on the other hand, is usually described as a feeling, impression or dream about something that has not yet happened.

You might dream about an unexpected reunion and then encounter that person days later. Or you could feel unusually drawn to a place shortly before an important opportunity appears there.

Some people interpret these experiences spiritually, believing they involve awareness of future events.

There is no established scientific evidence that humans can reliably predict future events through supernatural premonitions. Still, the experiences themselves can feel remarkably personal.

And I understand why someone who has lived through one might want to explore what it meant to them.

Why Do We Sometimes Know Something Before It Happens?

Your mind processes an enormous amount of information throughout the day, much of it without your conscious attention.

You notice people's expressions, familiar routines, changes in conversations, and tiny details in your environment.

Sometimes those observations come together as a feeling before you understand the reason behind it.

Researchers have studied how unconscious emotional information can influence decisions, confidence and reaction times.

This helps explain why some gut feelings seem to arrive so suddenly.

You may have recognised a pattern without consciously realising it.

But there's another side to this.

Think about how many passing thoughts you have in an ordinary week. You might randomly think about dozens of people, places and possible events.

Most of those thoughts lead nowhere, and you quickly forget them.

When one happens to match something that occurs later, it becomes memorable.

That's part of the reason certain coincidences feel extraordinary.

It doesn't mean you can't find spiritual meaning in the experience. It simply helps to understand that our memories tend to hold onto the remarkable moments.

Can Your Angels Give You a Feeling That Something Is Coming?

This is where I want to share my perspective as an Angel Communicator.

When people think about receiving messages from angels, they often imagine something very obvious.

Perhaps a voice, a vivid vision or an unmistakable sign.

But within my experience of spiritual communication, I don't believe every meaningful impression arrives that way.

Sometimes what we interpret as guidance is much quieter.

It may be a sudden sense of encouragement to explore something new, a thought about a conversation we've been putting off, or an idea that keeps returning despite our attempts to dismiss it.

I believe our relationship with our angels can encourage us to pay more attention to ourselves and the direction our lives are taking.

However, I would never tell someone that an unexplained feeling is definite proof their angels are predicting an event.

I also don't believe angelic guidance should leave you constantly expecting something frightening to happen.

If you feel something is coming, consider what the experience is drawing your attention towards.

Does it bring a sense of curiosity? Does it encourage you to reconsider a decision? Or has it made you anxious about something you cannot identify?

Those questions can be more helpful than trying to force the feeling into a prediction.

7 Ways People Experience a Feeling That Something Is About to Happen

Not everyone describes these experiences in the same way. Some people notice changes in their thoughts, while others describe physical sensations or unusual dreams.

Here are seven experiences commonly associated with intuition and premonitions.

1. Suddenly thinking about someone before they contact you

You haven't spoken to someone in months, perhaps even years, when their name unexpectedly enters your mind.

Later that day, they send a message.

This can feel particularly meaningful when the person is someone you had no obvious reason to think about.

From a spiritual perspective, some people interpret these moments as evidence of an energetic connection.

They can also be coincidences, or the result of familiar memories and associations.

2. Feeling that your life is about to change

You might be perfectly settled into your usual routine, yet feel that something new is approaching.

There's no specific event you can identify, but you find yourself questioning your job, relationships, surroundings or long-term plans.

Sometimes this happens because you're already becoming ready for change.

You may be noticing dissatisfaction, new interests or possibilities that haven't fully reached your conscious awareness.

Spiritually, you might view this as a period of preparation or personal growth.

3. Having a gut feeling about a person

Have you ever felt immediately comfortable around someone you've just met?

Or experienced the opposite, feeling uneasy even though the person appeared perfectly pleasant?

Our brains are remarkably skilled at recognising social patterns.

Past experiences, facial expressions, behaviour and personal associations can all influence those impressions.

Within spiritual beliefs, people may describe this as sensing someone's energy.

Either way, it's worth remembering that first impressions aren't always accurate. Give yourself permission to observe, ask questions and make decisions based on behaviour rather than feelings alone.

4. Dreaming about something that later happens

Perhaps you've dreamed about a particular conversation, location or event, only to experience something similar afterwards.

These dreams are often called precognitive dreams.

They can leave a powerful impression, particularly when the similarities feel specific.

Dreams frequently combine memories, expectations, emotions and ordinary experiences. Because we dream so often, occasional similarities between dreams and later events are to be expected.

If you regularly experience vivid dreams, writing them down before anything happens can help you distinguish what you originally dreamed from details you remembered afterwards.

5. Feeling unusually restless before a new chapter

Sometimes the feeling that something is coming doesn't arrive as a clear thought.

It appears as restlessness.

You may suddenly want to rearrange your home, change your routine, reconnect with people or start something you've been putting off.

You might even feel frustrated with circumstances that didn't particularly bother you a few months ago.

I find this an interesting part of personal growth.

Often, the first signs of change appear in our own attitudes and choices before anything externally changes.

6. Experiencing an unexpected feeling of excitement

Not every premonition involves worry or uncertainty.

Some people describe feeling unusually hopeful or excited for no obvious reason.

It's almost like looking forward to something you haven't planned.

Perhaps you're becoming more optimistic, noticing opportunities or beginning to imagine possibilities you previously dismissed.

Within angel spirituality, this may be interpreted as encouragement or a sense of alignment.

Enjoy the feeling if it brings you happiness, without placing pressure on a particular event to happen.

7. Feeling an unexplained sense of dread

This is probably the experience that causes the most concern.

You may feel uneasy, nervous or convinced something unpleasant is approaching, despite having no evidence of danger.

Although people sometimes interpret this spiritually, a persistent sense of dread can also be associated with anxiety, stress, panic or physical health conditions.

It's especially important not to assume that dread is a prediction.

If the feeling is recurring, overwhelming or accompanied by distressing physical symptoms, seek appropriate medical support.

How Can You Tell the Difference Between Intuition and Anxiety?

This is one of the most important parts of the conversation.

People often describe intuition as a quiet knowing and anxiety as a feeling that demands immediate attention.

While that distinction may be useful for some people, it isn't a reliable test.

Intuition can sometimes feel uncomfortable, and anxiety doesn't always arrive as obvious panic.

A person experiencing anxiety may have a very strong feeling that something terrible is about to happen,

even when there is no particular threat.

The NHS recognises fear of the worst happening, difficulty relaxing and excessive worry about the future as possible symptoms of anxiety.

If you're trying to understand a feeling, consider whether it's connected to an identifiable situation, whether you have information supporting it, and whether it becomes stronger when you're stressed or exhausted.

You can also ask yourself whether the feeling is helping you make a thoughtful decision or keeping you trapped in repeated worry.

A strong feeling is worth acknowledging, but it doesn't have to be treated as a fact.

You can respect your intuition while taking time to check what is actually happening.

What If You Feel Something Good Is About to Happen?

I wanted to include this because so much online discussion about premonitions focuses on warnings, danger and unsettling feelings.

But what about those moments when you feel unexpectedly hopeful?

Perhaps you've been through a difficult year and suddenly notice that you're thinking about the future

differently.

You begin making plans again, considering opportunities, or imagining yourself happier than you've felt in a long time.

You might describe it as a feeling that something wonderful is approaching.

From a spiritual perspective, some people view these periods as signs of becoming more aligned with their desires or opening themselves to new possibilities.

I also think there's something quite beautiful about recognising when your own outlook is changing.

Sometimes the first good thing approaching is the return of your enthusiasm, confidence or willingness to try again.

And those changes can influence what happens next because they affect the choices we make.

You don't need to know exactly what's coming to appreciate feeling excited about your future.

Why Do Some People Experience Stronger Gut Feelings Than Others?

Some people appear naturally more attentive to their surroundings, relationships and emotional experiences.

They may notice small changes in someone's mood, remember subtle details or recognise familiar patterns quickly.

Others spend considerable time reflecting on their dreams, thoughts and experiences, which can make intuitive feelings more noticeable.

Within spiritual communities, people often describe this as being highly intuitive, empathic or sensitive to energy.

In psychology, intuition is generally understood through processes such as experience, memory, emotion and unconscious pattern recognition.

Neither explanation requires someone to believe they possess extraordinary powers.

And being sensitive to your surroundings doesn't necessarily mean you're responsible for understanding everyone else's feelings.

I think that distinction matters, particularly for people who already spend a great deal of time worrying about others.

Can You Develop Your Intuition?

If you're interested in spiritual development, learning to understand your intuition can be a rewarding process.

I would begin with something very simple: becoming more familiar with how you think and feel.

Notice your first impressions, but don't immediately assume they're correct.

Pay attention to when your instincts have been helpful and when they may have been influenced by fear, expectations or previous experiences.

If you enjoy journalling, write down an impression before you know the outcome.

For example, you might record a feeling about a decision, explain why you think it matters, and return to it later.

This can help you recognise patterns without relying entirely on memory.

You can also include spiritual practices such as meditation, quiet reflection or speaking with your guardian angel.

For me, developing spiritually should involve greater awareness and discernment, rather than feeling pressured to interpret every thought as a message.

What Should You Do When You Have a Strong Feeling About Something?

First, acknowledge the feeling without immediately deciding what it means.

You might ask yourself:

  • Is there something happening in my life that could explain this?

  • Have I noticed any real changes or warning signs?

  • Am I excited, worried or simply curious?

  • Does this feeling relate to a decision I've been avoiding?

  • What would be a sensible next step, regardless of whether my impression is correct?

If you're spiritually inclined, you can ask your angels for guidance.

You might say:

My angels, if there is something I need to understand, please help me approach it with clarity, patience and an open mind. Guide me towards choices that support my wellbeing and help me recognise what is genuinely important.

Then continue with your day.

You don't have to spend hours searching for signs or trying to determine what will happen.

Sometimes understanding develops through ordinary conversations, new information or experiences that unfold naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean when you feel something is about to happen spiritually?

Some spiritual traditions interpret this feeling as intuition, heightened awareness or a premonition. It can also arise from unconscious pattern recognition, expectations, stress or emotional changes. The feeling itself doesn't establish that an event is about to occur.

Can you sense when something good is coming?

People sometimes experience excitement or optimism without a clear explanation. Spiritually, this may be viewed as a sense of alignment or anticipation, although there is no reliable way to use the feeling to predict a future event.

Are premonitions real?

Premonitions are real experiences in the sense that people genuinely report having them. However, scientific research has not established that they can reliably predict future events through supernatural means.

Can guardian angels warn you about something?

Some people believe angels communicate through intuition, dreams and symbolic experiences. This is a matter of spiritual belief. An uncomfortable feeling shouldn't automatically be treated as a supernatural warning.

Why do I feel like my life is about to change?

This feeling may reflect growing awareness of your needs, uncertainty about your current circumstances, anticipation or a desire for something different. Some people also interpret it as part of a spiritual transition.

Is a gut feeling always right?

No. Gut feelings can sometimes draw on useful experience and subtle observations, but they can also be influenced by assumptions, biases, fear and incomplete information.

My Final Thoughts as an Angel Communicator

I think one of the most fascinating parts of being human is how much we experience without always understanding it immediately.

There are moments when our thoughts seem to arrive out of nowhere, when a coincidence makes us stop in our tracks, or when we have a feeling that stays with us long after we've tried to explain it away.

I understand why people explore these experiences spiritually.

In my work, I encourage people to become more aware of their intuition and their relationship with their angels, but I also believe we need to leave room for ordinary explanations.

You can believe in spiritual guidance and still question an impression.

You can experience a meaningful coincidence without deciding it was destined to happen.

And you can feel excited about the future without needing a prediction to explain why.

If you've recently had that unexplainable feeling that something is about to happen, perhaps it's worth considering what's changing in your own life, what you've been noticing, and what you might be ready to explore.

Sometimes the feeling leads us towards a useful realisation. Sometimes it passes without anything unusual happening.

Either way, curiosity can teach us quite a lot about ourselves.

With angel love,
